HOMEFRONT [2011] STEAM PC REVIEW
๐ฎ GOOD ๐ฎ
I love Homefront despite its flaws is easily one of the most immersive and emotional campaigns in a market saturated with generic shooters. Driven by an ingenious and surprisingly compelling plot and a dark and dreary, realistic setting Homefront uses a very mature tone to deliver a memorable story. Too bad the enemy encounters turn too fast into shooting galleries.
One of the game's strong points is the way it depicts the brutality of war in a realistic way. Despite the dated graphics, the visual art provides a strong immersion feel in this US-occupied setting, and the acting & dialogues are supreme. The story is told without cut-scenes, but rather by in-game conversations during the staging or in combat with your fellow resistance fighters. My skin crawls when Rihanna was coughing during the white phosphorus mortar shell misfire and tries to say "we are not going to make it" and Connor goes "cut that!! Failure here is not an option!!" that focus on realistic dialogue makes you feel the stakes are too high, invested and immerse in the game. Then, when the KPA soldiers are burning from WP, Rihanna orders you to put them out of their misery, but as soon as you snipe one down, Connor will radio in "who's shooting? Let them burn!!" that's funny, but also the game depicts the brutality of war in a realistic way, especially how crude is the retaliation from resistance groups against brutal occupation forces.
Too bad the game over relies on its repetitive shooting galleries. The shooting is OK, it's not bad, but it is nowhere near COD quality. If you are not hooked on the goodies of the game, like its presentation or mature dialogue, you might only see its flaws, you would only see a generic shooter with endless shooting galleries of dumb enemies that march to their deaths or expose themselves just enough to be shot. I guess the graphics are ok but compared to other shooters released in that period they look dated.
Despite Its faults. Homefront is a game that I find myself coming back to enjoy the short and unique campaign over the years. The gunplay is satisfying enough to walk you through the endless shooting. Many stated that it's too short, but given its repetitive shooter formula, I think it's best this way. Short but action-packed with slow-paced moments in between to show some game lore. I waited for a sequel for a long time, and then Homefront the revolution came, it was so sad to see that in an effort to address players' critics, follow-up titles turned out to be open-world complete garbage.
Homefront is certainly one of the most unique shooters I’ve ever played and one of my favorites. Driven by an ingenious and surprisingly compelling plot and a dark and dreary, realistic setting Homefront uses a very mature tone to deliver a memorable story. But given its fundamentally flawed gameplay structure and short length, it's no wonder why many gamers dismissed it as a generic shooter. The game controls & feels like a typical shooter and looks like a game that’s several years old, and most importantly, features a very brief campaign that quickly turns into standard shooting galleries.
