THE LAST OF US PART I [2022] PS5 REVIEW
π MASTERPIECE π
The Last of Us Part I was released in 2022 as a PS5 Remake of the 2013 PS3 masterpiece and Game of the Year (GOTY). Since the game already got a Remastered version for PS4 in 2014, everyone was expecting some major new content but Naughty Dog only enhanced the graphics and the creative design and left intact the entire game structure. No doubt it improves the already remastered experience, this is the ultimate way to experience the classic. But also feels like a missed opportunity and a very expensive mod.
REMAKE? REMASTER? ... MOD?
Upon the game's launch, it sparked controversy in the discussion about the difference between a remake and remaster. But it all comes down to the 70 USD price tag. If inserting the ps4 disc of the remastered version they would have given you a 10USD upgrade path into the PS5 digital version, things would have been different. That's what Naughty Dog did with the Uncharted Legacy of Thieves, I placed the Uncharted 4 Disc and they gave me the option to get the new PS5 version for 10USD. Since TLOU Remake brings no new content, the enemy encounters are the same, the overall structure is intact, the dialogue, everything is intact, asking for 70 USD is just plain crazy. It's too expensive for a graphics and creative upgrade that is comparable to modern fan-made MODs and has nothing to do with the remake concept.
For those who completed the game several times, we can tell everything is exactly the same. I was waiting for a new story-based DLC like left behind, the story about Marlene crossing the US after getting shot, her journey to St Marys hospital, or maybe a history about Joel & Tommy surviving during the 20-year period after that night at the game's intro. But no, nothing. Not a single thing is changed. I'm thinking about bluepoint games and demon souls, they kept the original essence while creating a whole new game, a complete overhaul of the game structure, that's the remake for me.
NEWCOMERS PARADISE
If you already own the PS4 Remastered version, I don't recommend spending 70 USD on this "remake". The purchase only makes sense if you don't have the PS4 remastered version already, or if you never experienced the game in the 1st place, then it's a must-buy must-play. Otherwise, forget about it. I truly envy those who never experienced TLOU and get to play this ultimate version, as there is nothing like the 1st run, full of surprises, discovery, and excitement. If I get into those shoes, then 70USD is a fair price, even 90USD. So they could have made us all happy with a cheap upgrade path for previous owners.
STILL A MASTERPIECE
The Last Of Us remains the absolute gold standard for storytelling in video games and the most acclaimed of the PlayStation pantheon. Part 1 is the best and ultimate way to experience TLOU which is already a masterpiece. I really enjoyed how the Ps5 underlines the tech to boost the storytelling and gameplay experience. There are slight changes, the way Joel expresses his pain in his facial features is amazing and is something new. The haptic feedback & the triggers were nice additions too for "feeling" the world and objects you interact with. It's hard to come to terms with the 70 USD package. I feel they took advantage of my love of this game and really profited from that. I bought the original, and then the remastered, and now a 70USD remake with no upgrade path for previous owners and no additional content. Likewise, I know nobody forced me into buying those games, I guess when you love something you are hooked into it. I love everything Naughty Dog makes and I'm bound to buy those games π
